The Foundation for Clean Energy and Energy Inclusion for Africa (CEI Africa) is proud to announce an investment of EUR 1.1M in MPower Ventures AG through a combination of equity and subordinated loan, alongside crowdfunding platforms Klimja and Republic. This is CEI Africa’s first investment alongside these crowdfunding platforms.
The investment is part of MPower’s crowdfunding campaign on Klimja and Republic, which has closed EUR 795K and EUR 1.7M (inclusive of angel investors), respectively. MPower is a climate fintech that revolutionizes energy access by providing small and medium-scale solar energy infrastructure in developing countries. Using a B2B model that combines hardware, software, and financing solutions, they transform accessibility and impact into profitability. The capital will be allocated to support MPower’s growth including expanding its distributor network, diversifying its product portfolio, and expanding financing offerings, ensuring that clean energy solutions effectively reach the target customers. Additionally, it will support the diversification of its product portfolio to align with evolving customer needs and emerging market trends.
MPower finances and distributes small to mid-capacity solar products while providing knowledge, software, and financing solutions to its network of solar installers, distributors and large clients including large private companies. Its business model spans four key areas: (1) smaller solar systems, (2) backup systems, (3) small-scale Commerical & Industrial(C&I) projects, and (4) productive use equipment and e-mobility. MPower offers both inventory and consumer financing to its B2B partners and clients.
With over 50,000 solar products and appliances sold across seven countries—Zambia, Cameroon, Togo, Ghana, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe—MPower is now focused on scaling its presence in West and Southern Africa. The company aims to target markets with unreliable or non-existent grid infrastructure, catering to households and SMEs, including those in agribusiness and service sectors. CEI Africa’s funding will support MPower as it scales its operations and broadens its product portfolio, ultimately driving sustainable energy adoption across Africa.
Manuel Seiffe, co-founder and CEO of MPower, said “At MPower we are convinced that solar energy, coupled with finance solutions, is one of the most effective ways to boost economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa and fight energy poverty. We are excited about CEI Africa’s trust and support and look forward to working together. There is no doubt that CEI Africa’s match funding has catalyzed additional funding for MPower – crucial for our growth and expansion plans.”
Steven Evers, a Member of the Executive Board of CEI Africa, said “With CEIA’s support, we are excited to see MPower expand its impact across West and Southern Africa—bringing reliable, off-grid solar solutions to households and businesses in underserved markets. With this additional funding, MPower will be able to scale its efforts to drive sustainable energy where it’s needed most.”
MPower is accelerating access to clean energy through its B2B2C platform, dedicated to financing and providing affordable solar energy solutions to underserved countries in sub-Saharan Africa. At the heart of MPower’s mission is its commitment to empower businesses and communities by making high-quality solar products accessible to all. The company’s platform combines and offers accessible financing and hardware, bridging the energy gap for those who need it most.
Republic Europe, formerly Seedrs, is a leading global investment platform for community finance, empowering everyone to build a portfolio of meaningful investments.
Klimja, formerly Crowd4Climate is a crowd lending platform for participation in sustainable energy and climate protection projects. The company offers investors in Germany and Austria the opportunity to invest even small contributions in promising climate protection projects in Europe, especially in developing and emerging countries.
CEI Africa was established by KfW on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in 2021 to improve access to energy for rural households and enterprises in Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2022 the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) joined as a contributor to CEI Africa. CEI Africa works with financers, off-grid solar and mini-grid experts, to develop investment solutions that bridge the financing gap in the most challenging access to energy sub-sectors.
