The CEI Africa Technical Assistance Facility: A driver for growth and innovation of clean energy technologies

CEI Africa’s Technical Assistance Facility (TAF) is an important instrument for the development of clean energy projects. Through rigorous feasibility studies, strategic business planning, and comprehensive technical assessments, we provide specialized expertise needed to overcome technical challenges and enhance business performance. Our mission is to elevate investor readiness and access to financing while fostering the exchange of best practices and innovations in clean energy. Our support encompasses critical areas such as IT, legal, finance, gender, ESG compliance, and among others.

One impactful initiative is our support for Equatorial Power (EP) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where we are assisting with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and permitting processes. Since 2018, EP brings decentralized energy solutions, including solar hybrid mini-grids, to rural and peri-urban communities in Uganda, and DRC. This project not only mitigates environmental impacts but also enables EP to secure results-based financing from CEI Africa, a project marked as the region’s first electrification project.

We recently also started a project with Renewvia around Productive Use of Energy (PUE) market analysis, business modeling, and financial modeling. Renewvia, an experienced mini-grid builder and operator, serves over 5,000 customers in Kenya and Nigeria. Our TA addresses their challenge of underutilized energy production by identifying PUE business customers and value chains, thereby boosting innovation, energy uptake and economic viability. This assistance is vital as Renewvia expands its solar Green Mini Grid (GMG) capacity across sub-Saharan Africa.

Together, these stories illuminate the diverse ways in which CEI is driving growth of robust clean energy projects, surmounting technical hurdles, and enhancing investor readiness, thereby transforming energy access and economic prosperity in underserved regions.
