Powering Local Value: Unlocking Shea and Honey Value Chains in Mali

ACCESS SA is implementing an ambitious agro-industrial project in Garalo, Mali, aimed at unlocking the economic potential of the shea butter and honey value chains while strengthening community resilience. The initiative targets over 2,500 women engaged in shea nut collection and processing, as well as more than 600 beekeepers, 30% of whom are young women. Despite the region’s vast 200,000-hectare forest resource, current utilization remains low, with significant value lost through the sale of raw products across both value chains.

The project includes the installation of a shea butter processing unit with an annual capacity of 3,550 tonnes and modern honey filtration and wax production systems capable of processing up to 75,000 kg annually. Finished products are sold through direct distribution, local partnerships, and e-commerce. In collaboration with Agro-Industry Development SA (AID SA), the project leverages organic certifications to access high-value national and international markets.

Through Technical Assistance provided by CEI Africa, ACCESS SA is receiving targeted support in financial modeling and legal structuring to strengthen the project’s bankability and long-term sustainability.

The expected impact is substantial: annual incomes for the 2,500 women in shea processing are projected to increase from $31 (FCFA 19,500) to $256 (FCFA 160,000) per person. Incomes for the 600 beekeepers are expected to rise from $120 (FCFA 75,000) to $150 (FCFA 93,750) per person. Additionally, the project’s overall profitability rate for the productive use of energy (PUE) equipment is 28.66% over its 10-year lifespan. The project demonstrates strong financial viability alongside inclusive economic growth, job creation, and biodiversity conservation.
