Unlocking impact through targeted support

CEI Africa (CEIA) recognises the importance of offering technical support to off-grid electricity companies and potential crowd lenders in sub-Saharan Africa. While providing finance remains important, at CEI Africa we recognize that ensuring that this capital is used effectively to drive sustainable growth is equally critical. Accordingly, CEIA provides a Technical Financial Facility (TAF) to support off-grid electricity companies and crowd lenders in sub-Saharan Africa.

Technical Assistance
Goals

The main goals of our Technical Assistance Facility are to:

Assist off-grid electricity companies to:

  • Boost their business viability and sustainability
  • Attract new investment and scale

Improve investment readiness for growth-stage crowdlenders to:

  • Increase their understanding of the target market
  • Strengthen their ability to engage effectively with off-grid electricity companies.

What does Technical Assistance offer?

The Technical Assistance Facility delivers qualified, customised, and responsive technical assistance by providing specialised expertise, conducting studies, and offering comprehensive support. It collaborates with a diverse network of global partners to address the specific needsof its target audience across various domains.

Technical Assistance support can include ESG, HR and Gender, ITC and Data Management, Legal and Compliance, Accounting and Finance, Procurement and Business Development.

The TAF does not provide direct financial assistance; for information regarding funding opportunities, refer to the “Funding” tab. The typical size of a Technical Assistance intervention per beneficiary and thematic is 20,000 to 50,000 USD. Companies can submit for multiple TA requests across various themes.

Our Technical Assistance approach

The Technical Assistance Facility delivers assistance through two distinct streams: Bespoke Support and Thematic Support.

The TAF invites applications for both forms of support. However, thematic support facilitates expedited technical assistance delivery, whereas bespoke support generally necessitates a longer lead time.

Although participation in other CEIA funding windows can streamline the due diligence and approval procedures, it is not a prerequisite for accessing the TAF. Accordingly, all companies and lenders engaged in the off-grid electricity sector in sub-Saharan Africa are encouraged to submit applications.

Bespoke support

This service is generally tailored to organisations with diverse technical assistance needs that are specific to each beneficiary and not broadly applicable across the sector.

Thematic support

This service operates on the evidence that many companies in the sector have common needs, allowing the TAF to achieve greater impact by grouping these needs within a unified support framework.
