Powering Change: How CEI Africa’s Results-Based Grants Are Transforming Rural Life in Mali

Less than a year after signing a grant agreement with CEI Africa, Africa GreenTec Mali has reached a major milestone. As the first grantee under CEI Africa’s Results-Based Financing (RBF) component, the company has received a grant disbursement for the successful installation of more than 1,500 electricity connections, across rural Mali – the majority of which are in newly electrified villages.

The verified connections span both new and existing mini-grid sites, with 1,461 new connections across seven greenfield locations and 76 densification connections across 17 existing sites. All connections were verified remotely using AGT’s Internet-of-Things-enabled smart meters, in line with CEI Africa’s rigorous monitoring and reporting standards.

Africa GreenTec is a social  enterprise  providing clean, affordable electricity to rural communities in Mali, Senegal, Benin, Nigeria and Madagascar. Its innovative model centers on “Solartainers,” recycled shipping containers turned into stand-alone solar power plants.

The impact is already visible. In Kabaya, one of the newly electrified villages, residents are reporting tangible and meaningful improvements: food retailers can now safely prepare and store products and expand operations, households are safer due to light and enjoy an overall improved quality of life; and the local hospital can refrigerate medications and enhance laboratory work.

These are more than just electricity connections. They represent new opportunities for economic growth, improved quality of life, and stronger community resilience—made possible through clean energy.

This achievement marks significant progress toward Africa GreenTec’s goal of delivering over 3,800 connections under the CEI Africa grant within two years—a target the company is on track to exceed ahead of schedule.
