Solar Irrigation and the Challenge of Water Stewardship

A young farmer in Kenya previously spent roughly USD 230 per day trucking water to irrigate seedling greenhouses producing cauliflower, kale, broccoli, spinach, onions, tomatoes, and cabbage. After financing a solar pumping system and water storage infrastructure, she eliminated most of those operating costs, stabilized irrigation, expanded production across more than three acres, and significantly improved farm profitability. Stories like this are increasingly shaping the growth of solar irrigation across Kenya, where reliable water access is becoming central not only to agricultural productivity, but to long-term climate resilience. 

CEI Africa is providing Dayspring Ventures with USD 232,050 in Smart Outcomes Financing to support the deployment of 1,500 solar water pumps across 23 Kenyan counties, complemented by a USD 16,333 Technical Assistance grant focused on groundwater stewardship, sanitation safeguards, and environmental and social management systems. Through this combined support, Dayspring is helping farmers make more reliable use of available water resources through solar-powered irrigation and pumping systems that reduce dependence on expensive diesel pumps, while also strengthening the systems surrounding that expansion. 

The Technical Assistance work focuses on practical issues that directly affect farming communities over the long term: monitoring groundwater extraction, protecting water quality, training farmers on aquifer recharge, and ensuring irrigation expansion does not contribute to declining water tables. Field assessments also found that water reliability was strongly linked to farm expansion, income stability, and food security in the region. 

Dayspring’s approach combines solar irrigation technologies with financing models designed around the realities of rural agricultural cash flow. The company works with SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations) and flexible payment structures that allow farmers to begin installations while managing repayments through harvest cycles. 

What makes the project notable is that the focus extends beyond simply deploying irrigation equipment. Through its financial and Technical Assistance support, CEI Africa is helping ensure that growth in solar irrigation is accompanied by the safeguards, stewardship practices, and operational systems needed to support long-term agricultural resilience.
